Community Service Projects

Part of the 4-H pledge is “Hands through larger service” – a commitment to make our communities a better place to live. In 4-H, that means giving back to your town through community service. Kirbyville Wildcat 4-H selects a new community service project every month, whether it is collecting items, scheduling a clean up in our community, or helping an organization with needed volunteers.

4-H Role: Community Service Liaison

Bio:

I am Sarah Thames, the community service liaison for the Kirbyville Wildcat 4-H Club. In this role, I am responsible for coordinating and organizing our club's community service projects each month. This is my second year in 4-H, and I initially joined to become a member of the Piney Woods Vet Science Club to earn my Veterinary Assistant Certification.

This is my first leadership position in 4-H, and I am excited to learn how to coordinate with community members to make a positive impact. My primary project is veterinary science, and last year, I participated in the veterinary science record book competition. I am passionate about this project because I aspire to become a veterinarian one day.

Outside of 4-H, I am actively involved in my high school drumline, where I serve as the drumline captain. This leadership experience has given me valuable skills that I believe will help me be a successful leader in 4-H as well. As a high school senior, I am particularly passionate about my science courses, and I’ve found that the lessons from the Piney Woods Vet Science Club complement the TEKS we learn in school.

I am also a member of the National Honor Society, which provides me with opportunities to participate in various community service projects throughout the year. Being part of 4-H motivates me to represent the Kirbyville Wildcat 4-H Club well by excelling academically and being an active community member.

As community service liaison, my goal is to make our community service projects more productive than ever before and to help our club become even more active in the community. I aim to become a veterinarian, and 4-H is helping me achieve this goal by enabling me to earn my vet assistant certification. This certification will open up job opportunities in the veterinary field even before I start vet school, giving me invaluable experience.

One of my most memorable experiences in 4-H has been attending meetings with other members who are also close friends. Being a 4-H member has truly changed who I am by teaching me the importance of being active in my community. My advice to new members is to "Go all in. 4-H will give you some of the most valuable and unique experiences you will ever have." I believe that the most important quality for a 4-H officer is leadership, as strong leadership is key to efficiently guiding our club to success.

"To make the best better"
